The American dream takes to sea. Siemens has won the tender to establish the first offshore wind farm in the US. A giant commercial success for the German group, which places it at the forefront of a market of recognized potential.

The Cape Wind offshore wind farm is an important first step in what could prove to be a significant journey for Siemens. In winning the contract for the delivery and operation of America’s first commercial wind farm, the German giant has placed itself in a leading position in the US market.

The planned site off the coast of Massachusetts will be composed of 130 turbines each capable of generating 3.6MW, making its maximum potential total output 468 megawatts, roughly comparable to the wind farm at Saint-Nazaire.

The farm is planned to come online in 2016 and other projects may follow. At any rate, Michael Süss, the director of Siemens’ Energy group, has high hopes: “The United States is a key market for Siemens“, he commented.
